Earlier this year, Marvel conducted a poll to let fans decide the final member of the new X-Men roster, giving them a list of 10 mutant heroes to choose from. In the end, Polaris won the coveted spot on the team. But it looks like the consolation prize for the runners-up isn’t so bad either. This February, the remaining characters will form their own superhero squad in the pages of Secret X-Men #1.
The new one-shot comes from writer Tini Howard (Excalibur, X of Swords) and artist Francesco Mobili (Daredevil). And while the story’s characters didn’t win this year’s contest, their upcoming mission sounds pretty high-stakes. When the Shi’ar Empire calls on the X-Men for help in defeating a mysterious enemy, they send a team led by Sunspot and Cannonball that also includes Marrow, Tempo, Forge, Banshee, Strong Guy, Armor, and Boom-Boom. Once they arrive in space, they will be tasked with saving Xandra, the daughter of Professor X and Lilandra who has followed in her mother’s footsteps as the new Shi’ar Majestrix.

Additionally, the issue features a cover by Leinil Francis Yu that shows all nine mutants ready for a fight. You can check it out for yourself below.
“We had to do it, yeah?” said Howard in a new statement. “And I jumped at the chance to tell the story while I had the time. Cannonball was my vote, and Strong Guy? Tempo? Boom-Boom? This is the perfect team for an intergalactic X-Men mission. I hope they didn’t forget anything important!”
Secret X-Men #1 hits comic shops on February 9, 2022.
