Without DC Comics, we wouldn’t have superheroes as we know them. For over eight decades, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and more have set the template for all of the superheroes that came after them. Now, HBO Max is going to explore the history and cultural influence of DC in a new documentary.
Via Deadline, acclaimed documentary director and producer, Leslie Iwerks, will create a three-part DC documentary for HBO Max. Arrowverse producer Greg Berlanti will also produce the miniseries through Berlanti Productions. Mark Catalena will co-direct the miniseries with Iwerks, and co-executive produce it alongside Rachael Jerahian, and Jonathan Gabay.
According to the report, “the documentary series takes an unprecedented look at the enduring and influential legacy of DC, allowing fans to rediscover the universe of characters, as well as the iconic comic book company’s origins, its evolution and its nearly nine-decade cultural impact across every artistic medium.”

Iwerks is the granddaughter of Disney Legend Ub Iwerks, who has established herself as an excellent documentary filmmaker. She earned an Emmy nomination for The Pixar Story, as well as an Oscar nomination for Recycled Life. Her other credits also include The Imagineering Story, Downstream, League of Legends Origins, and Citizen Hearts.
DC’s Chief Creative Officer and Publisher, Jim Lee, also shared a statement celebrating the announcement.
“DC has a rich legacy of over 80 years of iconic storytelling: from the introduction of the genre defining Super Hero Superman in 1938 to the amazing movies, TV shows, cartoons, games and comics which have been synonymous with superheroism for generations thereafter. We are so excited to dive into this history and bring fans along this amazing journey.”
