Joker Cotar Brett Cullen Discusses the Movie’s Biggest Twist [SPOILER]
Major spoiler warning for Todd Phillips’ Joker!
The long-awaited Joker origin movie by Todd Phillips finally made it to the theaters this past weekend. The movie also dominated the box office, and left viewers with this very intriguing question: are Batman and Joker really brothers in this version of the tale? Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Joker star Brett Cullen, who played Thomas Wayne in Phillips’ blockbuster, confessed that he was “very surprised” when he discovered the film’s powerful revelation.
“The idea that the Joker is an illegitimate child that didn’t get anything from the Wayne family is a very compelling motivation for his character’s hatred,” Cullen said. ” This movie makes you feel for Arthur, when you see him struggling with his mother. And she’s saying, “Go see Thomas Wayne, he’ll help us. He’s a good man.” It’s gut-wrenching.”

Then the actor gave his point of view on the relationship between Thomas Wayne and Arthur’s mother.
“The backstory was that Arthur’s mother had worked for Thomas in his home, and she was a beautiful woman who Thomas was attracted to and it led to a physical relationship,” Cullen added. “Later in life, she’s in and out of mental institutions. And in my mind, Thomas Wayne put her there. What I like about the film is that it’s about real people with real faults who make mistakes. Some are done out of protection, like moving Arthur and his mother out of the picture.”
Todd Phillips’ story does not ultimately take a clear stand on Arthur’s real father. However, several clues scattered throughout the movie are seemingly pointing out that Arthur may actually be Bruce Wayne’s step-brother.
