How Stranger Things Climax Was Inspired by 1 D&D Video Game

Netflix’s Stranger Things ended with a finale that united fans in a rare moment of shared culture. As creators Matt and Ross Duffer wrapped their story in the two-hour “The Rightside Up,” they gave a climactic battle in the Abyss against the Mind Flayer and Vecna that felt both grand and intimately tied to the show’s roots. The secret inspiration behind that finale’s design? A hit Dungeons & Dragons video game.

How Baldur’s Gate 3 inspired Stranger Things climax

The Duffer Brothers revealed that the cooperative gameplay of Baldur’s Gate 3 directly shaped how they designed the Stranger Things climax. Matt Duffer explained the creative linkage. “We were thinking about D&D, and I was playing Baldur’s Gate 3 at the time,” Matt told Variety.

He emphasized that the core concept was a party working in unison. “We felt it was very important that the only way for them to defeat it was for the entire party to work together.”

This philosophy shaped the battle’s staging. Each hero entered the fray having resolved personal conflicts, their unique skills essential to the collective victory. “They’re the ultimate team, and it’s the party working all together to defeat this thing,” Matt noted. He drew a clear line from the game to the screen. “Lots of video game references were applied to that final battle.”

Interestingly, the Duffers revealed that D&D’s central role was somewhat accidental. “It wasn’t actually supposed to be that big a part of the show,” Matt admitted to Collider. It began simply as the kids’ hobby and a narrative reference point before organically growing into the show’s mythological backbone. Despite its importance, Ross joked about his own expertise. “My knowledge is embarrassingly low, considering how important it is to the show.”

All in all, by blending the cooperative spirit of Baldur’s Gate 3 with the timeless ritual of friends around a game table, Stranger Things crafted a finale that honored both its heroic battles and its heartfelt core.
