Star Wars Director Hopes Skeleton Crew Reminds OG Fans of Their Inner Kid

Skeleton Crew director David Lowery is ready for the Disney+ series to remind adult Star Wars fans what it was like to watch the sci-fi franchise as a child.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew will appeal to fans of all ages

Ever since Skeleton Crew was announced at Star Wars Celebration 2022, the upcoming Disney+ series has been described by Lucasfilm and series creators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford as a “galactic version of classic [Amblin Entertainment] coming-of-age adventure films of the ’80s.”

Unlike The Skywalker Saga or any of the live-action Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew does not feature a cast primarily composed of adult actors. Instead, Skeleton Crew is headlined by four child actors — Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kyriana Kratter, and Robert Timothy Smith — with Jude Law serving as the sole adult lead of the Star Wars show.

Despite the coming-of-age tone and younger cast, Lowery believes that Skeleton Crew will not appeal to Star Wars fans of all ages but remind the older fans what it was like to watch the original trilogy for the first time as a kid.

“It’s a show that involves kids, and yes it will be very appealing to kids who get to see themselves in this,” remarked Lowery to ComicBook.com. “But when I was growing up, I aspired to be Luke Skywalker and Han Solo . . . I didn’t need a show about children to make me love Star Wars. But what I think this one is gonna do is remind adults like myself of what it was like to be a little kid watching Star Wars for the first time.”

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew follows four kids who “make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet” and subsequently “get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Finding their way home, meeting unlikely allies and enemies will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined,” reads the official synopsis.

Besides the aforementioned actors, Skeleton Crew also stars Kerry Condon, Tunde Adebimpe, Dane DiLiegro, Jaleel White, Marti Matulis, and Nick Frost, with the latter voicing the droid SM 33.

Star Wars: Skeleton debuts with its first two episodes on Disney+ on December 3, 2024.
