The original Ultimate Universe diversified its line of heroes, introducing a Black Nick Fury and Asian Wasp. The new Ultimate Universe is continuing this trend. The Ultimates has not yet made any changes from its core lineup of classic Marvel heroes, but the solicitation and covers for The Ultimates #5 reveal a new Hawkeye of Native American Heritage.
Marvel Comics announced the new Hawkeye as part of a press release regarding their October 2024 Ultimates titles . Little is known about the new character, with no background or secret identity announced. However, the new Hawkeye is featured prominently on the main cover of The Ultimates #5 and one variant.
Both covers for The Ultimates #5 may be viewed below.
New Hawkeye premiere “brawl of arrows versus shields”
The solicitation for The Ultimates #5 teases the new Hawkeye having an antagonistic relationship with the titular team. Marvel’s press release says the new challenger will stand against the Ultimates, trying to stop them from reclaiming stolen Stark Tech. This leads to a fight with Captain America, who tries to win the young archer over to their side.
This is in keeping with the history of the original Marvel Universe, where Clint Barton was an Iron Man villain before reforming. He also had a somewhat contentious relationship with Steve Rogers while still respecting the Sentinel of Liberty. For this reason, the new Hawkeye seems to be a chip off the old block.
It should be noted that the fates of Clint Barton and Kate Bishop in the new Ultimate Universe are unknown. The first issue of The Ultimates showed one character rejecting the Hawkeye costume and trick arrows. However, there’s no way of knowing if this hooded figure was Clint Barton or someone else chosen to take up his mantle. In any case, it would seem someone else has taken the title, though it remains to be seen if they will be friend or foe to The Ultimates.
The Ultimates #5 arrives in comic shops everywhere on October 9, 2024.
