Batman: Caped Crusader’s Bruce Timm Teases ‘Spooky,’ ‘Week 2’ Version of Bruce Wayne

Batman: Caped Crusader’s Bruce Timm says he wanted the Dark Knight to be “weird” and “spooky” in the upcoming animated series.

Batman: Caped Crusader premieres on Amazon Prime Video this coming August. The series is executive produced by Batman: The Animated Series’ Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves, Ed Brubaker, and Sam Register.

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Timm said he wanted Batman to be “kind of weird and spooky” in the new animated series. He added, “If you’re stuck in a room with Batman, whether you’re Commissioner Gordon or Barbara Gordon or Renee Montoya, you don’t feel comfortable. You’re kind of like, ‘What is this guy? What’s this all about?’”

Timm also said that Batman will be very “early in his career” as a superhero. “In the first episode, he’s still an urban myth. It’s not Year One, it’s more like Week Two,” he commented.

Timm also commented on Alfred Pennyworth’s role in the series, saying, “[Bruce] weaponises Alfred. He’s not Batman’s surrogate father anymore. He’s a guy that’s going to enable him to fight crime. That’s how focused [Bruce] is. It’s a weird take on him. But it’s something I don’t think we’ve seen before.”

What is Batman: Caped Crusader about?

“It is an all-new animated series and reimagining of the Batman mythology,” the logline for the series reads. “Utilizing state-of-the-art animation techniques, this powerful creative partnership will once again reinvent the character and his iconic rogue’s gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters, and intense action sequences, all set in a visually striking world.”

The voice cast for Batman: Caped Crusader includes Hamish Linklater, McKenna Grace, Toby Stephens, Reid Scott, Dan Donohue, Gary Anthony Williams, Jason Watkins, John DiMaggio, Krystal Joy Brown, Michelle C. Bonilla, Eric Morgan Stewart, Tom Kenny, Minnie Driver, Diedrich Bader, Jamie Chung, and Christina Ricci.

Batman: Caped Crusader premieres on Amazon Prime Video on August 1, 2024.
