Powerpuff Girls Return to Comics With Kelly Thompson

Though featuring in cartoons more than comics, The Powerpuff Girls remain three of the most popular superheroes ever. 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup saving the city of Townsville. This makes it an ideal time for the trio to return to comics. That return will be scripted by superstar writer Kelly Thompson, in the latest series born of Warner Bros. partnership with Dynamite Entertainment.

“I have to say, I am a very big fan of The Powerpuff Girls,” notes Kelly Thompson. “So much so that when I was young — just out of art school — I even wrote a few short stories and began to storyboard them in hopes I could get a job on the show! So this just feels… exactly right. I was over the moon to get the offer.”

Thompson promises that the new series, much like the original Powerpuff Girls cartoons by Craig McCracken, will be aimed at both younger and older audiences. The comic will contain the same life lessons for children, as well as self-aware genre jokes for the parents. Thompson seems an ideal writer to deliver that balance, given her humor-packed runs on series like Birds of Prey, Captain Marvel, Black Widow, and Hawkeye.

Powerpuff Girls Comic Art Team Revealed

Dynamite knew an equally amazing artist was needed to build upon Thompson’s scripts for Powerpuff Girls. They found that artist in Paulina Ganucheau. She is perhaps best known for her work on DC Comics‘ “Adventures of Young Diana” feature from Wonder Woman. However, Ganucheau also has extensive experience working on children’s franchise comics, having drawn My Little Pony and Rainbow Brite.

Paulina Ganucheau is as excited to be working on Powerpuff Girls as Kelly Thompson. “I grew up obsessed with them,” Ganucheau recalled. “Had my own PPG OC and everything. I was on a Powerpuff Girls oekaki board way back in the day where all we did was draw in that style. I remember calling into Cartoon Network for PPG merch giveaways even.”

In addition to the Powerpuff Girls comic interiors, Ganucheau has also drawn the main cover, depicting the heroes fighting several of their enemies. The premiere issue will also feature a cover by Kelly Thompson’s Birds of Prey collaborator Leonardo Romero. Other variant issues have been produced by Karen S. Darboe and Nicoletta Baldari.
