Spider-Man 4: Sam Raimi Dismisses Rumors of New Tobey Maguire Sequel at Sony

Legendary Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi is setting the record straight about rumblings of a fourth installment starring Tobey Maguire.

“Well, I haven’t heard about that yet. I did read that, but I’m not actually working on it yet,” Raimi said to CBR (via X, formerly Twitter) during an appearance at WonderCon. “I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with current Spider-Man [movies], and the track there, and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me, and say, ‘Well, folks, we can also tell that story!’”

What happened to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4?

In 2009, Sony went into development on Raimi’s fourth Spider-Man movie with stars Tobey Maguire and Kristen Dunst set to reprise their roles as Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, respectively. New additions to the franchise were to include Anne Hathaway as Felicia Hardy/Black Cat and John Malkovich as Adrian Toomes/The Vulture. When Raimi could not commit to a 2011 release date, Sony canceled the sequel in favor of the 2012 reboot The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield.

In 2021, Maguire reprised the Wall Crawler in the multiverse-centric Spider-Man: No Way Home opposite Garfield and Tom Holland. The blockbuster success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe installment renewed interest in Raimi’s unproduced Spider-Man 4. The director, however, confirmed that he has not engaged in sequel talks with Maguire.

“I love all the new Spider-Man movies. I loved Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was really, super powerful seeing Tobey [Maguire] again in it,” Raimi added. “I haven’t talked to Tobey about it, but maybe Marvel has, or Columbia Pictures. But, I just worked with Marvel on a movie called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So, I’m on great terms with them. I’m sure I would hear about it if it was in the works. I think so. I don’t know.”

Marvel fans can stream Tobey Maguire’s trilogy, Andrew Garfield’s duology, and the Spider-Man: Homecoming trilogy on Disney+.
