After a two-year wait between seasons, The Boys finally capped off its latest batch of episodes yesterday with an explosive finale packed with multiple different cliffhangers. Amazon previously renewed the show for season 4 last month. But while Butcher and the gang probably won’t be back onscreen for at least another year, we might not have to wait this long to catch more supe-on-supe action. While speaking with Variety, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke provided some updates on the new spinoff series, including a possible release window.
The spinoff (which may or may not be called The Boys Presents: Varsity) takes place at a Vought-sponsored training facility where young supes learn how to use their powers. Following a showrunner change and a few tweaks to the cast, the new show began filming earlier this year. Now, Kripke has revealed how production is coming along. He also suggested that the series will debut on Amazon before The Boys returns for season 4.
“The spinoff is almost halfway through shooting already,” said Kripke. “I think the overall goal is to start leapfrogging them, where, a series of months after The Boys wraps, season 1 of the spinoff will drop. And then a series of months after that, season 4 of The Boys will drop.”

Additionally, Kripke confirmed that the spinoff is “picking up elements” from The Boys season 3 and expanding on them, which will also inform how season 4 of the flagship series begins. Fortunately, the producers have already laid some of the groundwork. In the episode where Hughie visits the Red River orphanage and goes through their database, he sees a photo of one of the spinoff’s main characters, Marie M. (played by Jaz Sinclair). Plus, the show dropped even more hints about what’s to come in season 3’s fifth episode.
“Only a very, very small one, which is when A-Train and Blue Hawk are talking,” explained Kripke. “Blue Hawk makes a reference to, ‘We both trained under Brink at school, and he taught us how to dominate totally.’ Because both of those guys graduated from Good Oak, which is the name of the school [in the spinoff]. And Brink is a reference to the big superhero trainer at that school who is a character in the spinoff.”
Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters are co-showrunning the new series with Kripke onboard as an executive producer. The cast also includes Lizze Broadway, Chance Perdomo, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, Asa Germann, Shelley Conn, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sean Patrick Thomas, and Marco Pigossi. Amazon still hasn’t announced a premiere date.
