Todd Phillips Confirms Joker Sequel, Reveals Working Title
Ever since director Todd Phillips’ Joker became a smash success in 2019, rumors of a Joker sequel have been swirling. Although the prospect seemed unlikely at more than a few points, it appears that the project is officially going forward. Via Variety, Phillips confirmed the sequel’s existence with a first look at the script, and a picture of Joaquin Phoenix reading it. Phoenix won an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck/Joker in the original film.
According to the cover page, Phillips re-teamed with Scott Silver on the script. Phillips and Silver co-wrote the first movie as well. The pic also reveals that the working title for the sequel is Joker: Folie à Deux. In case you were wondering, “Folie à Deux” means “Madness for Two” in French.

The first Joker film was largely a portrait of Arthur’s mental illness and his rapidly declining sanity. He wasn’t a supervillain, but that didn’t stop him from murdering a few people along the way. There were a few nods to Bruce Wayne’s origin as Batman, but the future Dark Knight was presented as decades younger than Arthur himself.
As for the sequel’s premise, the title suggests that Arthur’s Joker might get a partner-in-crime. Harley Quinn would certainly fit that role well, given her place in the Batman mythos. But the sequel’s title could arguably be applied to Bruce Wayne as well. Arthur’s antics as the Joker indirectly led to the death of Bruce’s parents. That’s something the younger Wayne would probably not forget if he becomes the Batman of this world.
At the moment, Warner Bros. hasn’t officially acknowledged Phillips’ reveal. And the Joker sequel has no date attached.
