Jurassic World Dominion Featurette Highlights the Film’s Leading Women

A worldwide fascination with dinosaurs made Jurassic Park one of the top-grossing franchises of all time. But another major staple of the films has been their forward-thinking depiction of women. Ever since Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) uttered her famous “Dinosaurs eat man, woman inherits the Earth” line, the movies have introduced a strong female characters. Now, four lead actresses are about to share the screen in Jurassic World: Dominion. Which makes this a perfect time for them to consider how the series has challenged traditional gender roles over the last 30 years. Jurassic World Dominion featurette.

Dern, Bryce Dallas Howard, DeWanda Wise, and Isabella Sermon all ponder this question in Universal’s latest Dominion featurette. From the beginning, Dern and Steven Spielberg wanted to make Ellie a “feminist female action character.” Eventually, this became a blueprint for her successors. Howard (Claire Dearing) observed how Jurassic Park has always been a “pro-female franchise,” noting out how all the dinosaurs in the films are female. But more importantly, Dern also appreciated how the movies feature a diverse cast of women instead of adhering to a single archetype.

Sermon, who returns as Maisie Lockwood from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, added that it was “important” for her character to have these female role models in her life. But the presence of strong women was also a selling point for Wise, who appears in Dominion as pilot Kayla Watts. Director Colin Trevorrow recently hinted that Kayla could “potentially define the future of this franchise.” So it was important to give her a meaningful arc in the sequel.

“I feel beyond honored to join this franchise,” said Wise. “From inception, it’s had great roles for women that have a degree of character development and depth. And that’s what I saw in Kayla.”

Jurassic World: Dominion will hit theaters on June 10.
