Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore Opens With $43 Million

There’s trouble in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and not even the Boy Who Lived could easily solve this problem. While the eight Harry Potter movies were genuine blockbusters, the Fantastic Beasts franchise is struggling. The latest installment of the Potter prequels, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, finished at #1 at the box office with only $43 million. That’s a franchise low, and only $4 million higher than Morbius had two weeks ago. The previous low for the franchise was the $62.1 million opening of The Crimes of GrindelwaldSecrets of Dumbledore opens.

The second weekend and beyond will ultimately determine whether this is a catastrophe or simply a box office disappointment. The newly formed Warner Bros. Discovery won’t give up on making more Harry Potter projects. But this could be the end of Fantastic Beasts, and the rest of the prequel story may remain untold.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had a strong second weekend in the number 2 slot with $30 million, and a new $119.6 million total. Coming in third was The Lost City with $6.5 million. The surprise of the week is Everything Everywhere All at Once, which had an expanded release and locked up #4 at the box office with $6.1 million. The religious drama, Father Stu, wrapped up the top five with $5.68 million.

Morbius dropped an additional 54% in its third weekend with $4.7 million, and a new $65.1 million domestic total. Sony’s Marvel adaptation may be able to crawl to $75 million domestic in the next few weeks, but its prospects beyond that don’t look good. Michael Bay’s Ambulance placed seventh with $4.04 million. The Batman took eighth place with $3.8 million and a new $365 million total. However, The Batman is now on HBO Max, and it’s likely to fall out of the top ten next weekend. The Indian film K.F.G. Chapter 2, took both the ninth and tenth slots at the box office with Sia, and Viva/Hindi language versions.
