Spider-Man: No Way Home owes its record-breaking success to a number of different factors. But a lot of the credit belongs to co-writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. The pair followed up their critically-acclaimed work on Spider-Man: Far From Home with an epic script that carefully balanced action and fan service with humor and heart. Now that Sony and Marvel are launching a massive awards season campaign for the new film, Deadline is offering a closer look at the writers’ creative process. The funniest thing about the script is that it was written under the fake title of “Serenity Now” (an obvious Seinfeld reference) in order to maintain secrecy (although the names of the writers themselves offer some pretty big hints). But other than that, it doesn’t seem to deviate from what we saw play out onscreen.

Interestingly, whenever McKenna and Sommers brought a new supervillain into the mix, they specified the exact actor playing him and the original movie they appeared in. We can also finally confirm that the writers referred to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s returning wallcrawlers as Raimi-Verse Peter and Webb-Verse Peter, respectively.
Unfortunately, the script doesn’t reveal the identities of the villains who were about to break through the multiverse at the end of the film’s climactic final battle, instead referring to them as “shadowy silhouettes.” And we also don’t get a transcription of the mid-credits scene featuring Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock, who memorably crossed over from Sony’s Venom franchise.
