Video games are on the precipice of a major turning point in Hollywood. After decades of failed film adaptations, new projects like Halo and The Last of Us are about to prove whether live-action translations of beloved games work better as TV shows. And it sounds like this experiment will also include a Mass Effect series on Amazon Prime.
Deadline is reporting that Amazon Studios is “nearing a deal” to adapt Mass Effect for TV. This comes on the heels of Amazon Prime’s adaptation of The Wheel of Time and the uber-expensive Lord of the Rings series.
“You will see us continuing to invest in fantasy genre of all kinds,” said Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke. “We have a genre-focused team on the ground in Studios who work tirelessly with our creative partners on those slates. And you can look forward to more.”

BioWare released the original Mass Effect in 2007 as an Xbox 360 exclusive. However, it was later ported to PC and PS3. Set in the year 2183, the game imagines a future where interstellar travel has allowed humans to colonize other planets and a large portion of the galaxy is controlled by a governing body known as the Citadel Council. Players controlled Commander Shepard, a special forces operative who leads a team of soldiers against various cosmic threats.
The first game was a huge success and eventually spawned two sequels that hit stores in 2010 and 2012. Earlier this year, Electronic Arts remastered the original trilogy and released it as Mass Effect Legendary Edition back in May. A spinoff, Mass Effect: Andromeda, previously arrived in 2017.
