Brendan Fraser Cast As the Villain In HBO Max’s Batgirl Movie

Batgirl finally has her nemesis. Via Deadline, Brendan Fraser has been cast in the Batgirl film as the primary villain. However, his character has not been confirmed. Deadline’s sources indicate that Fraser may be playing Firefly, a lesser known villain in Batman’s rogue’s gallery. But for now, Firefly’s part in this story is just a rumor.

Fraser is best known for starring in The Mummy trilogy, as well as George of the Jungle. Additionally, Fraser provides the voice of Robotman/Cliff Steele on HBO Max’s Doom Patrol. Some of Fraser’s upcoming films include Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.

Leslie Grace will headline the film as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl. J.K. Simmons will also co-star as Commissioner James Gordon, Barbara’s father. Simmons first portrayed Gordon in Justice League. The only other confirmed cast member is Jacob Scipio, who previously co-starred in Bad Boys For Life.

Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are helming Batgirl, from a script by Christina Hodson. It will begin filming later this year.

HBO Max hasn’t set a premiere date for Batgirl, but a late 2022 debut seems likely.
