Later this year, DC’s Dead Boy Detectives, Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine, will make their live-action debut during Doom Patrol season 3. However, the dead boys may soon get a series of their own.
Via Variety, HBO Max has ordered a Dead Boy Detectives pilot which could lead to an original show. The two leads made their first appearance in The Sandman #25 by Neil Gaiman and artists Matt Wagner and Malcolm Jones III.
Within the comics, Edwin was murdered in 1916 and condemned to Hell. When Hell was emptied, Edwin returned to Earth and befriended Charles shortly before he was also murdered. But the two boys declined to enter the afterlife. Instead, they decided to stay on Earth and solve supernatural crimes.

The Dead Boy Detectives graduated from supporting status to headliners in their own comic book miniseries and an ongoing series. That’s why the rights are separate from The Sandman series on Netflix. Sebastian Croft and Ty Tennant will portray Rowland and Paine in Doom Patrol. Regardless, neither Croft nor Tennant are “believed to be attached” to the new pilot.
Steve Yockey will write and executive produce the pilot episode. Also attached to executive produce are Supernatural veteran Jeremy Carver, as well as Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden. According to Variety, the plan is to film the pilot in November once a director has been found.
