Zack Snyder Signs New Pact With Netflix, Plans Army of the Dead 2

After spending the last 10+ years making movies for Warner Bros., Zack Snyder is officially setting up shop at Netflix for the foreseeable future. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Snyder, through his Stone Quarry Productions banner, has signed a first-look deal with the streamer that covers the next two years.

News of the pact comes two months after the premiere of his first collaboration with Netflix, Army of the Dead, which quickly became one of the platform’s most-watched original films. Netflix will soon flesh out the movie’s universe with an upcoming prequel, Army of Thieves, as well as an anime spinoff, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. And under Snyder’s deal, he will also develop an Army of the Dead sequel with co-writer Shay Hatten.

“My goal and hope are to bring as much quality content as I can and do it on a giant scale,” Snyder said in a new statement. “Big projects and big movies.”

Snyder recently announced that he was re-teaming with Netflix on Rebel Moon, a new sci-fi feature that reworks an idea he had for a samurai-inspired Star Wars film in 2015. That movie is expected to start production next year. Additionally, Stone Quarry is developing an “action vehicle” to be helmed by Snyder’s longtime second unit director, Damon Caro.

Snyder’s wife and fellow producer, Deborah Snyder, also issued her own statement about what makes Netflix such a great partner.

“For us, it was so important to find a partnership that was based on mutual respect,” she explained. “The creative process works best when everybody trusts each other and you can take chances and be creative. For us, we don’t usually play it safe. The content we make is a little bit edgier. And I think it’s important to have a good partnership and hear each other.”

“And Netflix has given us a lot of freedom,” added Deborah. “But they’ve also embraced the idea of trying new things and not necessary waiting for a success before moving ahead.”
