Tom Spezialy Joins Sony’s Silk TV Series as Showrunner

Sony is getting serious about it’s upcoming foray into Marvel-themed television. Last fall, word broke that the studio was in talks with Amazon to produce new shows featuring any Spider-Man-adjacent characters they still hold the rights to. Now, the first of those projects finally has a showrunner. Deadline is reporting that Tom Spezialy has been tapped to spearhead Sony’s live-action Silk series.

Amazon Studios signed Spezialy to a development deal, and Silk will be the first show under his new contract. He also has prior experience with the superhero genre. Spezialy served as an executive producer on HBO’s Watchmen in 2019 and shared in the show’s win for Outstanding Limited Series at last year’s Emmy Awards. Spezialy also developed Ash vs. Evil Dead for Starz alongside Sam Raimi and Ivan Raimi. Some of his other TV credits include writing episodes of The Leftovers, Desperate Housewives, and Reaper.

Writer Dan Slott and artist Humberto Ramos introduced Silk (a.k.a. Cindy Moon) during their Amazing Spider-Man run in 2014. Cindy gained her powers from the same radioactive spider that bit Peter Parker. But unlike Peter, Cindy can spin webs organically from her fingertips. Aside from Sony’s new series, the character is also rumored to be making an appearance in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2.

Spezialy is also executive producing Silk alongside Lauren Moon, who wrote the show’s pilot episode. Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Amy Pascal are onboard as executive producers as well. Sony and Amazon haven’t set a premiere date.
