Hannah John-Kamen Cast As Red Sonja For the Upcoming Reboot Movie

Nearly four decades ago, Brigitte Nielsen starred as Red Sonja on the big screen. Now, the Red Sonja reboot film has selected Hannah John-Kamen to take over the title role.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the story about John-Kamen’s new part. The film will be co-written and directed by Transparent creator Joel Soloway.

“Hannah is a very talented actress who we’ve been following for years and she IS Red Sonja,” said Soloway in a statement. “Her range, sensibilities and strength are all qualities we have been looking for and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this journey together.”

Conan the Barbarian creator Robert E. Howard’s Red Sonya of Rogatino was adapted to comics by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith in the early ’70s. However, Red Sonja quickly became a breakout character and starred in her own comics. Dynamite Entertainment is publishing Red Sonja’s current comic adventures, and she still retains her iconic metal bikini. It remains to be seen if John-Kamen’s Red Sonja will also wear her signature attire. For the record, Nielson’s Red Sonja did not keep the bikini.

John-Kamen has a number of genre credits to her name including starring stints in Killjoys, The Stranger, and Brave New World. She also appeared as Ghost in Ant-Man and the Wasp. Additionally, she will play Jill Valentine in Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City.

Tasha Huo, the showrunner of Netflix’s upcoming Tomb Raider animated series, is co-writing the Red Sonja movie with Soloway. Millennium Films’ Avi Lerner, Boaz Davidson, and Trevor Short are producing Red Sonja with Dynamite’s Nick Barrucci. Red Sonja LLC’s Luke Lieberman is also producing the film.
