Marvel is Releasing New Warhammer Comics Next Year

In the last few years, Marvel has re-added Star Wars and Conan comics to its always-expanding stable of content. Now, another beloved geek property is getting its own comic series from the House of Ideas. Via The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel is teaming up with Games Workshop to launch new comics set in the Warhammer universe in 2020.

Warhammer creator Rick Priestly drew influence from fantasy authors like J.R.R. Tolkein and Michael Moorcock when the original tabletop game was released in 1983. Priestly developed a medieval war experience that also included familiar genre tropes like magic and dragons. A few years later, Priestly created a futuristic spinoff, Warhammer 40,000, which depicted a war between humans and aliens.

The franchise is no stranger to the comic book medium. Games Workshop previously published graphic novels under its own Black Library imprint. Warhammer 40,000 will soon be making a splash on TV as well. A live-action series based on that iteration is coming together under former The Man in the High Castle showrunner Frank Spotnitz. That show will follow the exploits of fan-favorite character Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn.

Marvel editor Mark Basso also shared his excitement for the upcoming venture in a new statement:

“I can’t tell you how excited we are about diving into the depths of the expansive universes of Warhammer,” said Basso. “At Marvel, we’re no strangers to telling deeply character-focused tales set in an interconnected world of stories, and fans are going to love what we’re already starting to cook up with the Games Workshop team for the Warhammer comics.”

More details may be announced during this weekend’s New York Comic-Con festivities.
