How Bryce Dallas Howard Got Star Wars Directing Advice From the Best

A number of directors will get a chance to show off what they can do with the Disney+ series The Mandalorian this fall. Among them is Bryce Dallas Howard, who previously appeared in the Jurassic World films. The actress recently stepped behind the camera to helm an episode of the Star Wars series.

Howard directed a number of shorts in the past, as well as the feature documentary Dads, which she worked on with her father Ron Howard.  She recently shared the advice she had gotten from him and series creator George Lucas with Variety.

“What he just kept saying again and again and again…this is just the most incredible sandbox that you will ever get the opportunity to play in,” she explained, pointing at the scope of the Star Wars universe.

The younger Howard explained a very powerful takeaway from a story that popped up during the making of Willow, where her father worked with Star Wars creator George Lucas. He encouraged the director to let storyboard artist David Lowery “take a crack” at the narrative. And it was a move that really paid off.

“That really is the essence of collaboration and the power of collaboration,” she explained. “The people are just all in, give everything, own it, own the process themselves, and then are like, ‘Your turn.’ It is so exhilarating and grounding and it doesn’t ever get about the ego, because it’s all about Star Wars, which it needs to be.”

Given that her primary feature directorial credit already was a collaboration, she’s off to a good start.

Howard joins Taika Waititi, Deborah Chow, Dave Filoni and others as directors for The Mandalorian. Fans will be able to see what they can do when it premieres on Disney+ on November 12.
