Going into this morning’s 89th Academy Awards nominations, a lot of genre fans were wondering if their favorite films would be well represented. The answer is… sorta. While the beloved Deadpool got completely shut out (despite garnering two major Golden Globe nominations), other comic book movies and sci-fi flicks got their day in the sun.

Most surprisingly, critical whipping boy Suicide Squad scored a nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and based on all the Harley Quinn cosplay it inspired, the DC film probably deserved it. Box office underperformer Star Trek Beyond also earned a nod in the same category.
On the Marvel Studios front, the franchise king earned a single nomination for Best Visual Effects for the trippy, Steve Ditko-inspired visuals in Doctor Strange. Lucasfilm‘s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story also got an unsurprising effects nomination for ILM’s groundbreaking work bringing corpses back to life, and is likely the winner in said category. The spin-off film, which just crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide, also landed a Best Sound Mixing nod.
This was also a good year for the more serious sci-fi fan, as the critically-lauded hit Arrival scored a staggering eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Denis Villeneuve (who also has Blade Runner 2049 out later this year). The not-so-well-liked Passengers also managed to eek out two nominations for Guy Hendrix Dyas’ amazing sets as well as Thomas Newman’s very Thomas Newman-y score.
