Deadline brings word that comic book power couple Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick have signed a two-year overall deal at Universal TV where they will adapt some of their creator-owned comics to television with the Eisner and Harvey Award-winning series Sex Criminals set as their first adaptation. The pair also plan to use their Milkfed Criminal Masterminds production company to adapt their other comics as well as original ideas and other comic creator’s projects.
“We’re always excited to usher in fresh voices to the television space, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with Matt and Kelly Sue, a fantastic pair whose award-winning comics are as deeply realized as they are entertaining,” said Universal TV EVP Bela Bajaria.
Fraction and DeConnick have made a splash in the mainstream Marvel Comics ranging from Fraction’s Hawkeye, The Immortal Iron Fist and Punisher War Journal to DeConnick’s Captain Marvel, Avengers Assemble, and Avenging Spider-Man. The pair have also created a number of high profile independent comics including the 1950s television centric Satellite Sam, the gender bent outer space retelling of Homer’s epic ODY-C, the psychedelic western Pretty Deadly, and the play on women-in-prison films Bitch Planet.
Sex Criminals, created by Fraction with Chip Zdarsky, centers on a girl named Suzie who possesses the ability to stop time after having sex. After she meets a young man named John who has the same gift they use their “powers” to rob banks.
